Autism Spectrum Disorder in Georgia as a Public Health Challenge: Early Detection, Bariers, and Intervention

Introduction: Early identification of autism spectrum disorder and timely intervention are essential for child development, social functioning, and family support. In the Georgian context, delayed diagnosis, limited access to services, and insufficient parental awareness remain important challenges. This study aimed to assess how early signs of autism are identified, how diagnosis and early intervention are initiated, and what barriers children and their families face in accessing appropriate services. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design with a case study approach was used. The study examined 30 cases of children with diagnosed or suspected autism spectrum disorder. Data were collected from parents and professionals using structured and semi-structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings showed that early signs of autism often appeared in early childhood, but referral to specialists and diagnosis were frequently delayed. Parents identified lack of information, financial costs, waiting lists, and difficulties in maintaining continuous therapy as major barriers. Early intervention was associated with improvements in communication, social engagement, behavioral regulation, and daily functioning. Conclusion: Improving autism care in Georgia requires systematic developmental monitoring at the primary healthcare level, greater parental awareness, expanded access to diagnostic and early intervention services, and stronger family-centered support. Early identification and timely intervention should be considered key public health priorities for improving developmental outcomes among children with autism spectrum disorder.
